PSHE

PSHE statement of intent:

At Emmanuel, we follow the Kapow curriculum for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).  The scheme aims to give children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century.

We intend for our PSHE curriculum to help children to:

  • Build and develop their skills to make and maintain positive, caring and respectful friendships, family relationships and relationships with others.
  • Support positive mental health by developing their confidence to talk, listen and think about feelings and relationships; develop a positive self-image and high self-esteem and know where to get confidential advice and support.
  • Develop empathy, kindness, resilience and respect for themselves and others.
  • Understand the importance of personal boundaries, privacy and consent in age-appropriate ways.
  • Recognise unhealthy, unsafe or abusive behaviours and know how, when and where to seek help from trusted adults.
  • Navigate the online world safely, responsibly and respectfully, recognising both the opportunities and potential risks of digital communication.
  • Appreciate and respect diversity of our school community, including the different types of families; promoting inclusion; and challenging prejudice, bullying and discrimination.
  • Develop the confidence and skills needed to make safe, responsible and healthy choices as they grow.

Introduction to PSHE

PSHE is a valued and highly-regarded subject here at Emmanuel and aims to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to manage their lives now and in the future. Delivering a broad and balanced life-skills PSHE curriculum is essential for us in helping our children to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most out of school, work and life.

The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.

Kapow Primary’s RSE/PSHE scheme of work covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education), including the non-statutory sex education. The scheme covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National curriculum (2014) that schools ‘should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE).’ Children’s learning through this scheme would significantly contribute to their personal development as set out in the Ofsted Inspection Framework and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy; rule of law; respect and tolerance and individual liberty.

The Kapow Primary scheme is a whole-school approach that consists of six areas of learning in EYFS: Reception (to match the EYFS Personal, social and emotional development prime area) and seven areas of learning across Key stages 1 and 2.

EYFS:

  • My feelings
  • Special relationships
  • Taking on challenges
  • Listening and following instructions
  • My family and friends
  • My wellbeing

Key stage 1 and 2:

  • My healthy self
  • Connecting with others
  • The online world
  • Citizenship
  • Health protection
  • Staying safe
  • Growing up and Sex Education

Please see the curriculum map below to show how these areas are delivered to each year group throughout the year. The lessons provide a progressive programme to build on prior learning.

As a school, we also organise themed weeks, mapped across the curriculum, which complement and enrich our planned PSHE teaching programme e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, Black History Month, Children’s Mental Health Week and Diversity Week.

We also invite experts and visitors from the community to further strengthen the learning experience, such as the Mental Health Support Team delivering secondary school transition support to our Year 6s.

In addition, other activities in school promote our aims and outcomes for PSHE.  We develop pupils’:

  • Confidence, responsibility and making the most of their abilities through the use of positive rewards systems and class responsibilities
  • Role as active citizens through School Council, Emmanuel Express newspaper champions, Wellbeing champions, charity work, elections, debates and pupil questionnaires.
  • Healthy and safer lifestyles through the promotion of Walk to School week, ‘A K a Day in May’, Bikeabiliy and playground games.
  • Good relationships and respect for differences between people by celebrating different families, cultures and communities.
