Meeting Our Equality Duty

How We Comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty

Under the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), Emmanuel C of E Primary School actively works to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations across all protected characteristics (disability, ethnicity, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation, and gender identity).

1. Eliminating Discrimination and Harassment

We ensure equality and non-discrimination are embedded across all school operations and policies:

  • Policies & Oversight: Our commitment is reflected in our [Behaviour Policy], [Anti-Bullying Policy], and [Staff Code of Conduct]. Governors regularly review equality outcomes and policy implementation.

  • Staff Training: Staff receive regular updates and training on safeguarding, equality duties, unconscious bias, and supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

  • Monitoring & Action: All incidents of prejudice-based bullying or harassment (e.g., racist, homophobic, or disabilist incidents) are recorded, reported to leadership, and addressed promptly.

2. Advancing Equality of Opportunity

We take active steps to remove barriers and ensure all pupils have full access to learning and school life:

  • Academic Tracking: We track pupil progress by specific demographic groups (e.g., pupils eligible for Pupil Premium, pupils with SEND, English as an Additional Language learners) to identify and close attainment gaps early.

  • Accessibility & Inclusion: We adapt curriculum materials, physical environment spaces, and extra-curricular offerings to ensure full participation for disabled pupils and staff.

  • Targeted Support: We provide tailored interventions—including social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) support—to assist vulnerable learners.

3. Fostering Good Relations

We actively build an inclusive community that values diversity and mutual respect:

  • Curriculum & Assembly: Diversity is integrated across our curriculum, including RE, PSHE, and history, alongside designated focus weeks celebrating national and cultural events.

  • Pupil Voice: Our School Council and pupil leadership roles represent the diversity of our school and give children an active voice in shaping our inclusive culture.

  • Community Partnerships: We maintain strong connections with local churches, faith institutions, and community organizations to promote shared cohesion.

4. Equality Information & Data Monitoring

To monitor our effectiveness and inform policy decisions:

  • Pupil Profile: Data regarding pupil demographics, attainment, attendance, and exclusions is routinely analyzed by senior leadership and the Governing Body.

  • Workforce: As a school employing fewer than 150 staff, we are not required to publish detailed employee equality data to protect individual privacy, but we strictly follow non-discriminatory, safer recruitment practices in line with local authority guidelines.

(To view our detailed performance and demographic contextual reports, please visit our Attainment and Progress and Pupil Premium pages.)

Our equality objectives are:

Promote Diverse Representation in the Curriculum and School Environment

Ensure that the curriculum, resources, displays and wider school experiences reflect diverse cultures, identities and perspectives so that all pupils feel represented and valued.

Narrow the Attainment Gap

Reduce attainment and progress gaps for disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND through targeted support and high-quality inclusive teaching.

Strengthen Staff Diversity and Inclusive Practice

Support a diverse and inclusive workforce and promote opportunities for staff from underrepresented groups to progress into leadership roles.

Gender Pay Gap Statement

Under the Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017, employers with 250 or more employees are required to publish annual gender pay gap calculations.

As Emmanuel Church of England Primary School employs fewer than 250 staff, the school is not legally required to publish formal gender pay gap data.

However, we are fully committed to fairness, equality, and transparency across our workforce. All staff members are remunerated in accordance with national pay frameworks and local authority guidelines, ensuring equal pay for equal work regardless of gender.
